Cape Town, South Africa, is a breathtaking destination renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere. In this ultimate travel guide, I’ll share the top 10 things to do in Cape Town that will elevate your travel experience.

From iconic landmarks like Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront to hidden gems nestled in the city's vibrant neighbourhoods, Cape Town offers a diverse range of activities for every type of traveller. This comprehensive guide will show some of the best experiences this captivating city has to offer.

  1. Go to the Top of Table Mountain

No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip to the iconic Table Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of Nature. For those who love adventure, you can hike up to the summit in 1-3 hours, depending on your fitness level. However, if you're looking to save time and enjoy spectacular views without the sweat, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is the perfect alternative. This five-minute ride provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the coastline, making it a must-do experience. The cableway costs approximately R340 / £16 for a return ticket and it's advisable to book in advance to avoid long queues. Once at the top, take the time to soak in the stunning vistas, as you'll want to capture the beauty of Cape Town from this breathtaking vantage point. Whether you choose to hike or take the cable car, reaching the summit of Table Mountain is an unforgettable highlight of any Cape Town itinerary.

  1. See the Penguins at Boulders Beach

One of the top attractions near Cape Town is Boulders Beach, home to a delightful colony of African penguins. Located in Simon's Town, just a short drive from the city, Boulders Beach offers a unique opportunity to see these iconic birds in their natural habitat. Interacting with the wild penguins while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery is truly one of the most unforgettable experiences in South Africa. You can stroll along the boardwalks and get up close to the penguins as they waddle along the beach and swim in the crystal-clear waters. Be sure to check out my full blog post on 'How to See the Penguins at Boulders Beach' for detailed information on visiting this incredible spot.

  1. Go Shopping & Eat at the V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is a vibrant hub in Cape Town, offering a delightful blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment set against the stunning backdrop of the harbour. With approximately 450 retail outlets and over 80 restaurants, this bustling waterfront is a must-visit destination for travellers. Whether you're looking for high-end fashion, unique souvenirs, or local crafts, the V&A Waterfront has something for everyone. Take a leisurely stroll along the harbour, where you can enjoy watching boats come in, playful seals basking in the sun, and breathtaking sunsets with a glass of local wine. Don’t miss the V&A Food Market, where you can sample delicious local produce and find the perfect gifts. For a more eclectic shopping experience, head to the Watershed, an industrial-style market featuring local vendors showcasing their brands, including clothing, accessories, and handcrafted gifts. The V&A Waterfront truly captures the essence of Cape Town, making it an essential stop on your itinerary.

  1. See Nature at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Park

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of the world's most magnificent botanical gardens, located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Covering over 1,300 acres, Kirstenbosch showcases more than 2,500 species of indigenous plants, including themed areas like the medicinal garden and the fragrance garden. Take a free guided tour to learn more about the diverse plant life, or wander at your own pace to soak in the beauty of this natural oasis. A must-do here is the Boomslang Canopy Walk, an elevated walkway that offers breathtaking views of the treetops and the surrounding mountainscape. This treetop adventure gives visitors a unique perspective of the lush vegetation below and the majestic mountain backdrop.

Once you’ve explored the gardens, there are on-site restaurants, which serve a variety of local and seasonal dishes. If you’re visiting at the right time of year, check out the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts or catch a film at the open-air cinema for an unforgettable experience in this stunning natural setting.

  1. Visit the Brightly Coloured Bo-Kaap Houses: A Must-See in Cape Town

No trip to Cape Town is complete without a visit to the vibrant neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap. Known for its brightly painted houses and rich cultural heritage, Bo-Kaap is one of the most photogenic spots in the city. Stroll along the cobblestone streets lined with colourful homes, each one a testament to the area’s diverse history. The neighbourhood is a melting pot of cultures, with roots deeply embedded in Cape Malay traditions, and is the perfect place to learn about the unique cultural influences that have shaped Cape Town’s identity. Wander through the streets, but be aware that it's best to take an Uber there and back, as the area isn’t the safest for tourists, especially after dark.

  1. Explore Camps Bay: Cape Town’s Most Scenic Beach Destination

Camps Bay is a must-visit destination in Cape Town, drawing tourists from around the globe to experience its pristine beach, vibrant restaurants, and lively bars. It’s not just a beautiful spot to unwind, but also a great base for exploring Cape Town’s top attractions. Many of the accommodations in Camps Bay, from luxury hotels to cliffside villas, offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Table Mountain. Staying in this stunning beachside area ensures you're close to some of the best activities Cape Town has to offer.

  1. Explore The Old Biscuit Mill Market in Cape Town

Situated in Woodstock, The Old Biscuit Mill is home to artists, designers, restaurants and a market (including local food and designer boutique clothes) as well as office space. Apparently it's always busy and vibrant, which it was when we went there. I would recommend going here for a couple of hours and getting a taxi from Cape Town as there isn't much else around it and apparently it's not safe to walk there.

When we were there we managed to get a table at The Pot Luck Club restaurant. This 'sophisticated tapas' restaurant is on the 6th floor of The Old Biscuit Mill and whilst you eat you can take in the views of Table Mountain, the views are almost as good as the food. It's so hard to get a table here (because the food is AMAZING), but we went and asked on the off chance and they managed to fit us in. See my blog post on 'Where to Eat in Cape Town' where I give a full review of The Pot Luck Club.

  1. Relax at the Famous Clifton Beaches in Cape Town

Clifton Beaches are famous for their pristine white sands and have been ranked among the best beaches in the world. Divided into four main beaches (with Clifton 4th being the most popular), each one offers a perfect escape for rest and relaxation right in the heart of Cape Town. After a day soaking up the sun, you can head to the nearby cliffside bars and restaurants for a meal or a sunset cocktail with spectacular ocean views.

  1. Horse Riding in Cape Town: An Unforgettable Experience at Noordhoek Beach

Horse riding on Noordhoek Beach is an unforgettable experience, even for those who aren't passionate about riding, like me! This activity allows you to explore one of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa, with its expansive 5-mile stretch of pristine white sand and breathtaking blue sea. Noordhoek Beach is frequently cited as one of the best beaches in the world, and it's easy to see why.

During the 1-hour horse riding session, riders of all experience levels, including beginners, are welcome. The stables, such as The Dunes Stables, ensure that each rider is paired with a suitable horse based on height, weight, and experience. As you ride along the stunning sandy shore, you'll enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and picturesque scenery. The horses are gentle, making for a relaxing ride along the coast. To book your session, simply message the stables in advance. For your comfort, it’s recommended to wear long trousers, trainers, and a sports bra (if you’re female).

  1. Spend a Day in Kalk Bay: A Charming Coastal Village Near Cape Town

We stayed in Kalk Bay for three days during our South Africa adventure, but it’s close enough to Cape Town for a perfect day trip. This charming fishing village has been named one of “The 12 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World,” offering a delightful contrast to the bustling areas like Camps Bay. Kalk Bay’s unique blend of a laid-back vibe and vibrant energy is evident in its cobbled streets, which are lined with charming cafes, vintage bookstores, and boutique shops. The local restaurant scene is exceptional, showcasing fresh seafood and international cuisine. Be sure to take a refreshing dip in the Dalebrook Tidal Pool, a stunning natural swimming spot with breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding mountains.
