Chicago in 48 Hours: Your Essential Itinerary for Exploring the City

Travel Guide for Seeing Chicago in 48 Hours

Chicago, famously known as The Windy City, is one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the USA, celebrated for its striking architecture, breathtaking skyline and of course, its iconic deep-dish pizza. With so many must-see attractions and activities, you can explore the best of Chicago in just 48 hours.

I visited in early October, expecting weather similar to the UK's, so I only packed a light jacket. However, Chicago’s weather can be unpredictable and much colder, so be sure to pack extra layers to stay warm.

While safety is a common concern for visitors, I found Chicago to be relatively safe, especially during the day. I walked to most places and felt comfortable, though I opted for Ubers when travelling at night to stay extra cautious.

Situated in the heart of Millennium Park, Chicago's iconic Cloud Gate, famously known as 'The Bean,' is a must-visit sculpture. This stunning mirrored artwork reflects the city's impressive skyline and offers unique views from every angle. The experience changes throughout the day as the light shifts, making it a photographer's dream.

For the best chance to snap photos without the crowds, visit Cloud Gate at sunrise. As one of the top tourist attractions in Chicago, it gets quite busy during the day, but early mornings are perfect for unobstructed views and memorable pictures.

Who knew Chicago had a beach? I certainly didn’t! Oak Street Beach, located along the shores of Lake Michigan, is a surprising urban oasis where you can walk on sandy shores and even go for a swim. The waves from Lake Michigan crash onto the beach, making it a unique spot while taking in the stunning view of the Chicago skyline. If you're feeling adventurous, take a dip in the lake! Even in October, when the weather and water can be quite chilly, it's a refreshing experience. Whether you swim or just take in the views, Oak Street Beach is a fun and unexpected activity in Chicago.

  1. Experience The Tilt at Chicago 360: A Thrilling View from the John Hancock Center

Head up to the 94th floor of the iconic John Hancock Center to experience Chicago 360, an observation deck offering panoramic views of the city. One of the top activities here is The Tilt, a thrilling experience where you hold onto handles as the glass tilts forward, leaning you out over the city below. If you’re afraid of heights, like I am, it can be quite intense— but it's absolutely worth it!

Tickets for The Tilt cost about $10 on top of your general admission, bringing the total to approximately $30. Once you've steadied your nerves , go to The Cloud Bar on the same floor. Enjoy a drink while soaking in more stunning scenery of Chicago’s skyline.
