Guide to Gran Cenote, Mexico

Trip to Gran Cenote, one of Mexico's most famous cenotes to swim near Tulum

Visiting a cenote is a MUST when visiting Mexico. A cenote (a specific term associated with Mexico) is a natural sinkhole that has an underground chamber of water where you can go swimming. There are more than 6,000 cenotes in Mexico, so do some research to decide with ones you want to visit.

Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote is one of the most popular cenotes due to its clear waters, making it great for diving and snorkelling. Get there for when it opens (10am) as it gets really busy. It's 25 USD to enter and before you go in the cenote you need to shower to remove any suncream or natural oils in case they upset the ecosystem. Once you've entered the cenote you can hire lifejackets, masks & snorkels. Inside the various chambers of the cenote you can swim with fish and turtles, don't forget to look up where you can see thousands of bats hanging down, occasionally flying across the cenote. Once you are done you can sit out on the grass banks and when you are ready to leave there are loads of taxis at the exit.
