Guide to Kalk Bay: Things to do, places to eat and drink in Kalk Bay, Cape Town

Kalk Bay is a small fishing village in False Bay and is about a 30 minute drive from the centre of Cape Town. Although it is considered a suburb of greater Cape Town, it feels a much more different to the rest of Cape Town and is a must visit whilst you are in South Africa.

Set on ocean with a stunning backdrop of mountains, head of to Kalk Bay to experience the perfect combination or quirky, vibrant and laid back vibes. Kalk Bay is home to many independent galleries, bohemian boutiques and fantastic restaurants, all with stunning views of the ocean in front and the rugged mountains behind.

We stayed in Kalk Bay for 2 nights and 3 days, but you could also visit for the day from Cape Town. Below I've compiled a guide to Kalk Bay - the best things we did whilst there.

Where to Stay in Kalk Bay

We stayed in Chartfield Guest House whilst visiting Kalk Bay. A room costs about £60 a night and Chartfield Guesthouse is very good value. The rooms are quite basic, but clean and the location is one of the highlights, it was just a short walk to all the shops and restaurants. There's a swimming pool in the garden with sunloungers, making it the perfect place to relax in the sun during the day. Each morning they serve breakfast on the terrace (included in the price), offering a good choice of options.

Where to Swim in Kalk Bay

Dalebrook Tidal Pool

Kalk Bay has a lot of natural pools to swim in and our favourite was Dalebrook Tidal Pool. The views are absolutely stunning, being surrounded by the ocean as well as the backdrop of the mountains. Because the pool is surrounded by rocks it's the perfect place to swim as it's calm and shallow, making it a good place to paddle or take children to swim.

Where to Eat & Drink in Kalk Bay

There are so many lovely bars and restaurants scattered across beautiful Kalk Bay. From restaurants overlooking the harbour, to rustic cafes and bars perfect to watch the sunset over the ocean, there are plenty of choices and variety to experience whilst you are in Kalk Bay. Here are some of the best restaurants and bars in Kalk Bay.

1. SALT

Probably our favourite restaurant in Kalk Bay. Salt is set on the harbour, overlooking the bay with stunning views of the ocean and fishing boats. This rustic restaurant serves small plates and each dish was delicious from start to finish. We had seats at the window and it was the perfect setting as all the windows were open so we got to enjoy our food as the sunset across the bay. We got a variety of small plates to share including burrata and pasta.

2. Harbour House

Overlooking the ocean, Harbour House is a fine dining restaurant in Kalk Bay. This restaurant is quite fancy and the food is really good and the views are even better!

3. Brass Bell

We went here for lunch and it was great. It's set on the water of Kalk Bay so has views out to the sea and of the town.
